Vitamin D
Evidence Summary
One of the most rigorously tested supplements in existence. For people who already have adequate levels, the large trials (VITAL, ViDA, D-Health) show it does NOT prevent cancer, cardiovascular disease, fractures, or death. Its genuine, well-established value is correcting a documented deficiency — not general supplementation for longevity. A weak signal toward lower cancer mortality exists but is inconsistent.
Safety Considerations
Benefit evidence is population-dependent: real for correcting documented deficiency, largely absent for supplementation in people who are already replete. Very high doses carry their own risks.
