Low-dose lithium
Evidence Summary
One of the most scientifically intriguing dementia-prevention candidates — a 2025 mechanism plus three small trials all point the same direction. But the human evidence is still small and pilot-scale, and when the trials are pooled together the cognitive benefit is not yet statistically confirmed. Lithium also carries real kidney and thyroid risks and needs medical supervision. Important: prescription lithium carbonate at controlled low doses is NOT the same as over-the-counter 'trace lithium' or lithium orotate supplements, which have no comparable trial evidence.
Safety Considerations
Narrow therapeutic window — kidney and thyroid toxicity risk; requires medical monitoring of blood levels. Trials use deliberately subtherapeutic doses. Prescription lithium carbonate (studied) is distinct from OTC lithium orotate (not studied). Evidence is fast-moving — this grade is likely to change as larger trials report.
